Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Indigo Books & Music.
Customer Experience Associate
The interview process was great! People were really friendly, and the manager was super bubbly and positive. It felt like a really great company to be a part of. Typically, there's a one-on-one interview first, and then a group interview. The interviewer/manager really makes an effort to make sure everyone feels comfortable and happy to be there.
- Tell me about a book you really like.
- Imagine you need to persuade a customer to buy your favorite book. How would you do it?

After applying online, I heard back from them about two weeks later. They called me in for a group audition the following week. It was an early start at 7am, and though six people were supposed to come, only three of us showed up, including me. The interview was super chill. The store manager and operations manager interviewed us for the overnight operations role. First, we answered some questions. Then, we had to scan books and sort them into the right categories and sub-categories. The last part of the audition involved visualizing merchandise. I got an offer call two days later. I would have taken the job, but family stuff came up, and I couldn't work those hours anymore. It was a good experience though!
- What would keep you going during a late-night shift when you're tired?
- What makes you want to work for Indigo?
Customer Experience Associate
It was a group interview with about 12 people, planned for two hours. They asked three questions that everyone got to answer, and then two more where people could volunteer. The questions were decent, but the hiring managers really didn't handle the interview well. Some other candidates talked way too much, taking 5-10 minutes to answer questions without getting back on track, and the managers didn't moderate at all. I don't want to watch someone treat an interview like a comedy show, especially when the managers just let it happen. Because of this, they ran out of time and couldn't ask all their prepared questions, and I couldn't answer questions I wanted to because of the time-wasters. It was so unprofessional and poorly run. I was looking forward to this, but I would never consider this company again after that disorganized mess.
- Choose a book from the store that is most meaningful to you and try to sell it to us.
