This hiring process was a mess. They initially contacted me because, despite being underqualified for my initial application, they had another role in mind. The recruiter went silent, and after I followed up, they apologized for forgetting me, sounding quite desperate when I stated I was no longer interested. The final interview was at their Stamford office, and it was the third person I spoke with about the position. Compensation and benefits details were still unclear. I emailed the recruiter to withdraw my application.

Get ready to give a marketing plan presentation on-site. If you don't have marketing experience, you need to do your homework! Look around, search online, visit stores, and chat with industry folks... don't come up with some fake, impossible plan because you'll be found out! Be ready for follow-up questions. It's not the easiest interview process, but don't let that scare you. If you're a good candidate, any presentation mistakes will likely be overlooked. Everyone can be trained.

So when I first started, I had to do a whole 360 marketing presentation, which was really tough because I didn't have any marketing background. They don't do that anymore, so it's more of a regular interview now. The interviews are usually pretty chill and conversational, but I'd still suggest dressing up to give yourself the best shot at getting the job!

Confirmed questions8 questions
  • Be ready to talk about the shopper marketing landscape. Do some digging into the industry if you're not already in it so you can answer questions about it well. Know the different marketing vehicles (like POS, digital). Understand the difference between Brand, Trade and Shopper Marketing funding. All of this can help you sound smart. Have an answer ready for: What do you want in an agency? You should be looking for a company with a good culture that helps its employees grow. You should be looking for an agency that knows its marketing stuff and has a clear idea of where the industry is heading etc. It might sound cheesy, but they'll love it!
  • Show at least some understanding of the shopper marketing landscape.
  • Do some research on the industry to have an idea of how to respond to certain industry-related questions.
