First up was a technical round focused on rate limiters, where I had to design and implement one. This probably touched on stuff like token buckets, leaky buckets, sliding window counters, distributed rate limiting, handling bursts, fairness, scalability, and API throttling use cases. Then, I had an onsite round with the hiring manager. We talked about problems I'd solved in past jobs and how well I understood streaming and messaging systems. This included event-driven architectures, Kafka/Kinesis/Pulsar, consumer groups, partitioning, backpressure, delivery guarantees (at-least-once vs. exactly-once), and the difference between real-time and batch processing. The last round was a design round, focusing on scalability and data structures. I had to design a system considering scalability (high throughput, fault tolerance, load balancing), use the right data structures and algorithms, and potentially talk about system components, communication patterns, handling big data or high I/O, and the trade-offs between latency, consistency, and complexity.

My interview experience was smooth and professional. The recruiter, Kayla Dobbins, was super helpful throughout. She kept me updated on everything, gave clear timelines, and answered my questions fast. The interview process was organized and respected my time, with clear expectations for each part. Kayla's communication was great—I always knew what was going on, and her consistent follow-ups really cut down on interview stress. It was a really good recruiting experience, and I appreciated how professionally it was handled.

The recruiting process was pretty frustrating and not well handled. After the recruiter missed our scheduled interview because they were sick, I followed up several times to reschedule like they suggested, but I never heard back. Eventually, I just got a generic rejection email. It was disappointing how little communication there was and the lack of basic professionalism. For a mid-tier company, having four interview rounds seemed like too much, especially since the scheduling was so disorganized. Candidates should really get better treatment.

Had one chat with the Hiring Manager. Went for two on-site technical interviews. Got good feedback and was expecting another interview with VP Puneet. Tried to set up a call with him multiple times, but he no-showed twice and cancelled twice. Then he mentioned they don't need a backend Staff Engineer for the current team but do need a UI Staff Engineer and suggested moving my application to a TSE role. Very unprofessional.
