First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Illinois Department of Transportation.
Career Services Coordinator
It was a structured interview with 3 interviewers. They asked me seven questions based on scenarios to see how I'd handle different situations. The questions weren't what I expected. There wasn't any back and forth, they just typed up all my responses.
- What would be your course of action if a scheduled speaker for a major event cancelled at the last minute?
Engineering Intern
This job didn't really have an interview process. It was all based on the application, and the hiring took a really long time. They sent out offer letters the day after classes ended, which is pretty normal for them to finish hiring so late.
- What is your GPA?
- What is your major?
- How many credit hours have you completed?
Engineering Technician
I applied online by sending an email. After 2 months, I got an email saying I was selected for an interview. I called to set it up and signed the paper to release my criminal records. I drove 400 miles to Collinsvile for an 8:30 am interview with 3 people. They took a copy of my driver's license and then the interview started. I wasn't allowed to look at my resume but could write notes, which they took at the end. The interview was supposed to take 1 hour, but I finished in 30 minutes. They told me to wait several weeks, and after a month, I got a call, but I had already accepted another job, so I rejected them. Also, the location is remote and the position is only for 6-9 months.
- Describe a situation where you need to consult with yourself and your supervisor.
- Are you proficient in AutoCAD and Microstation for drafting?
- How do you demonstrate effective verbal communication?
Civil Engineer Trainee
It was your typical government interview. They give you a set amount of time to answer the exact same questions they will ask every candidate for that position. It is not your typical interview where they try to learn about your personality or anything they just write down your response and the interview is over. If you can answer questions and provide examples to those answers, it will go so smoothly.
- Was your Bachelor's degree from an ABET accredited university?
