I applied online, and it took about a month from submitting my resume to the in-person interview at their office. It was a great panel interview with the director of the economics department and a senior economist. They were nice, knowledgeable, and had a great sense of humor, making it more of a professional conversation and a good learning experience for everyone. They mostly asked about my resume, my research projects, and questions about Canadian economics. When I discussed my research, they asked several questions about the econometrics I used. They seemed genuinely interested in my research, the methodology, the results, and their relevance. They also asked a few questions to check my economics knowledge, specifically how I'd handle economic impact assessment questions. The interview ended with a 30-minute writing test where I had to provide a one-paragraph analysis for a client based on a 6-page Statcan report. About 3-5 days later, the HR Manager called me for a brief follow-up and then made me an offer.

The interview process for the Economist II role was mediocre. The HR rep and the Economists who interviewed me showed a lack of respect toward my candidacy. I interviewed in early October and got a letter of rejection at the end of January. The company likes to promote itself as "diverse" and "welcoming" but it is far from the truth. The Economist teams at IHS Markit are primarily made of White males who hire only other White males. There are virtually no Females or Minorities working as Economists for this firm. The disparity should raise eyebrows for many but clearly, it is not an issue for the senior leadership for this firm. Disregarding these hiccups, the interview process provided me an opportunity to understand the work produced by the Economists in this firm.

I applied online and the very next day, I got an email to set up a phone interview. The phone interview itself was pretty standard, nothing out of the ordinary. I'd suggest looking into the company and understanding what your role would specifically be there. They mainly asked about my previous work experience, my knowledge of the company, and my future career goals.
