First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Hyundai America Technical Center.
UX Researcher
I had an initial chat that was behavioral, and it touched on my academic researcher background. Then, I had another round that needed some prep work where I had to analyze the UX of my car and suggest ways to make it better. This included presenting my research and findings.
- How can the user experience of your current car be improved?
Data Administrator
We had an HR phone call first, where they discussed the main responsibilities of the role and checked my eligibility to work. After that, the HR set up a 45-minute technical interview. The last round was with a senior manager.
- Could you explain what database normalization and denormalization are?
- What distinguishes normalization from denormalization?
Manager
The interview felt unprofessional and disrespectful. Instead of having a thoughtful discussion about the role and expectations, the interviewer focused only on surface-level questions, showing little respect for the time and preparation that went into the process. Their responses to my questions were dismissive, making it difficult to gauge whether the role would be a good fit. Companies invest heavily in building their reputation, but every candidate interaction contributes to that brand. Unfortunately, this experience left a lasting negative impression that overshadowed the company’s otherwise strong reputation and vision. One piece of advice: Interviewers need more than technical expertise. People, communication, and leadership skills are just as critical as technical skills when representing the company to candidates.
- What would be the initial actions you'd take to tackle an immediate requirement we have?
Mechanical Design Engineer
The first interview is with the hiring manager of the team. It's a more casual phone call but they'll decide if you move on to the second round, which is a panel interview with 6 engineers, including the manager. They'll ask more technical questions about your resume. The manager will also send you a case study to present to the panel for 10 minutes. This part requires more prep and is harder.
- What's your approach to fixing quality defects like X?
