First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at HypoVereinsbank.
Business Development
The interview was held on MS Teams about 2 weeks after I sent in my application. We started with a bit of small talk, then discussed my resume, my studies, and my future career goals. After that, I was asked to give my assessment of the current banking sector situation. The goal was to see if I had some understanding of the field.
- What is your assessment of the current global banking sector situation?
Graduate Trainee
There was a speed date after an online assessment, 20 minutes total. It had four parts: the personal part for 8 minutes, the team part for 4 minutes, the international part for 2 minutes, and a Q&A part for 6 minutes. It felt like a really impersonal interview, similar to a time-limited video interview with an AI asking questions. They mostly asked typical HR questions and then just listened, with very little interaction.
- Could you explain why you are interested in this specific position and this company?
- Is there anything you'd like to share that isn't already on your CV?
- What advice would you give to your younger self?
Finance
Applied online and got contacted about a week later. Had the first interview over the phone with the head of the unit and a team member. It focused on the role and technical stuff like bank balance sheets, liquidity analysis, and risks. The second interview was a video conference from the UniCredit Tower in Milan with the head of the department and the head of the unit again. This one was more about me, my future plans, ambitions, and why I wanted to work for UniCredit. It felt more like a relaxed chat about myself.
- What makes up a bank's balance sheet?
- Can you explain repo and reverse repo transactions?
- What are the primary risks associated with a bank?
Intern
I applied online and then got a call from a director within a week. After that, I had a phone interview with two directors. Next, I traveled to Munich for two more rounds of interviews. This included a case study and group discussions with four directors in two separate groups. Even though it was for an internship, the interviewers were really nice and it felt more like a 'get to know each other' type of interview.
- Could you share details about your educational background and any relevant work experience, as well as explain various credit analysis ratios?
- I'm curious, how many buildings are there in your hometown?
- For the case study, I need you to identify a company and its type based on its three financial statements. I didn't quite get it in the end, but the director helped me throughout the process. Overall, it was a nice experience.
