I applied online and about 10 days later, I got a call back for an in-person meeting. I met with the HR person for a standard interview where we discussed the job, the company, and my previous experience. About two weeks after that, I was invited back to meet the restaurant manager. We had a one-on-one meeting, took a tour of the place, and I got to meet many of the current staff. Just when I thought it was finished, I was taken upstairs to meet with the food and beverage manager for a very casual and laid-back chat, which I really enjoyed. I felt valued because of the process's formality, but I was a bit surprised by how thorough it was for just a serving position.
- What draws you to the food and beverage industry?
- Describe a situation where you faced a challenge and how you resolved it.
Cook
I applied for an Overnight Cook position at the Andaz 5th ave, a Hyatt hotel. The process started with a written test covering basic culinary knowledge. Afterward, I met with the chef for an interview. They presented me with some unusual hypothetical situations and asked how I'd manage them. The chef maintained a very serious demeanor throughout, which made me reconsider working under their supervision.
- What menu would you create for a multi-course meal for important guests?

I applied through their website and got contacted the next day by an HR assistant for a phone screening. Then I was invited for an in-house interview happening in two days, I chose the 9am slot. When I got there, about 7-8 people were waiting for interviews. I waited about 10 min, with one person before me. My interview was conducted by another HR assistant. It was pretty standard, asking about my experience and skills, and if I had any referrals. I asked about the position, but the answer was unclear, so I was told to ask the manager. I waited to be interviewed by the restaurant manager. He arrived 15 min later, seemed a bit sleepy and yawned once, but was otherwise very direct. His questions focused on providing great service and how to achieve it, with 3 situational questions. After that, I waited to be interviewed by the F&B manager. She arrived 10 min later and invited me to a conference room where 3 other interviews were already happening. She started by saying she hadn't seen my application. I suggested she look at my resume, which I had provided. The questions were pretty much the same as from HR and the restaurant manager. My overall impression of the interviews was good, despite the slightly unprofessional handling of the interviews, the process itself was structured and standardized.
- What is the difference between good service and great service? Why?
- What is the difference between good service and great service? Why?
