First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Hy-Vee.
Assistant Manager
I applied online and heard back the next day, and had an interview that same day. I interviewed with the store director. Had to go to customer service, then they lead me to a back employee room where I sat on a bench for 10 minutes or so. The director came out, introduced himself to me, and led me to his office in the back of the building. The interview was 30 minutes long, and he was flipping through 20 or so questions he had pre-written down. He was nice and everything, but a lot of the questions were just dumb and had nothing to do with the job. I heard back from him 3 days later, and he told me he decided to hire someone internally.
- In your own words, what does service entail?
- What did you like best about your previous role?
- What are your expectations for your coworkers?
Assistant Manager
I was called in for an interview with the director. We discussed my strengths and weaknesses, and what I liked and disliked in a job. I emphasized my dedication to customer service, which he really appreciated as it's something they value. He mentioned that the assistant manager role is considered an entry-level management position and then offered me the job on the spot. I have two and a half years of experience as a supervisor in a food service company.
- In what areas do you think you can improve?
- How would you share your enthusiasm for your work with others?
- What makes you want to work at Hy-Vee?
Assistant Manager
After you submit your resume and apply online, I'd suggest going to the store in person and meeting with the store director. If they call you, they'll set up an interview at the store with typically the operations manager and the store director. Make sure to read up on the company's core values on their website. The questions are pretty standard; they want to know your short-term and long-term goals and why you'd be a good fit. Energetic, outgoing, and responsible people are the best candidates.
- What does 'being socially responsible' mean to you?
