First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Hulu.
Technical Program Manager
The interview started with two in-person informational chats, then moved to a full day of interviews. Technical managers asked basic tech questions and about a past complex project. The PMs discussed system design and their views on Hulu's product. The vibe was generally positive, with interviewers seeming happy in their roles and the culture appearing healthy. However, I got a feeling of micromanagement and potential friction between PM and TPM roles. The recruiter mentioned downleveling me to entry-level due to 'lack of enterprise experience', despite my 6 years at a major tech company, which I challenged. She also indicated a pay offer similar to my current salary. When I asked for a compensation breakdown, she refused to proceed if I wasn't guaranteed to accept, which I couldn't commit to without details on salary vs. bonuses. If the base salary was comparable and the rest bonuses, I might have considered it despite the demotion. The recruiter wasn't proactive in selling the role and transparency on compensation led me to withdraw my candidacy. It seemed like they weren't very keen on me and were trying to lowball me.
- Can you share an instance where a partner team blocked your progress?
Technical Program Manager
Applied online and then got a referral from someone I know there. Talked to the recruiter a few times, then had a full day of interviews on site. Everyone was super chill and easy to talk to. The questions were all about situations and management. The last interview was with an engineering lead who asked me iOS questions, even though I'd been upfront about not having mobile experience. It was a bummer that the more technical interview was last and on a topic I'd said I lacked project management experience in. I got good feedback throughout, but they eventually said I wasn't a fit for this specific role, though they'd keep me in mind for others.
- Can you describe a recent initiative you worked on, detailing the design and development process using a whiteboard?
Technical Program Manager
I went through three interview stages. First, I chatted with the recruiter. Then, I spoke with the hiring manager. After that, I had an on-site interview that lasted half the day, where I met with four different people on a panel. The recruiter got back to me with feedback really fast after each step. Everyone was really nice and made me feel welcome, so it was a pretty relaxed interview.
- Can you tell me about a situation you handled?
- Describe your process for X.
- What aspects of our company appeal to you?
