This whole process felt really impersonal. They only gave me one date to choose from in the email, which wasn't great for my time. When I got there on time, I waited in the lobby for over 10 minutes. The secretary then took me to a room to do a writing sample before meeting the panel. She even took my purse and phone while I was writing, which felt totally unnecessary and frankly, kind of demeaning. They gave me some scripted questions to look at just 10 minutes before I met the panel. The panel members didn't even get up to shake my hand. They just asked questions one by one, stuff they could have easily figured out from my resume. The whole thing took about an hour and a half. The panel lead gave me a card, and I sent a thank you email, but never heard anything back about whether they got it. I never got any update on my status or even a thank you for coming in. In today's job market, this old-school approach to recruiting, interviewing, and then ghosting candidates really reflects poorly on the school system. Turns out they hired someone internally. Why even post the job externally and waste people's time if you're just going to hire from within?

I applied online and then got an email to schedule an interview time one month later. The interview had 2 parts: first, a performance task where I had to translate a paragraph from English to Spanish and another from Spanish to English. Then, a panel interview where I was given a sheet with questions, had 10 minutes to review and take notes, and then each person asked the questions from the sheet.

First, there's a preliminary interview with HR asking about your background, how you differentiate yourself, and what ELA and Math look like in your classroom. If you pass that, you move to a level II curriculum interview where they ask about your classroom and lesson plans and how you manage behavior. After passing that, you're placed in the teacher pool for principals to select you. Hiring can take a really long time because they wait for transfers to be completed.

Confirmed questions7 questions
  • Can you describe what effective ELA instruction entails?
  • What would a typical Math class you teach look like?
  • Tell me about your classroom management approach.

They set one interview date and time, about 4-5 days out, with no other choices. It was a panel interview with about six interviewers who took turns asking questions. The questions were provided in advance, and I could take notes. I didn't get an offer and never got a response when I asked for feedback.

  • How would you help an employee asking for a workplace accommodation?
