Product Designer
I applied online and then interviewed remotely. First, there was a screen call with HR, who was nice and welcoming. Next, I had a portfolio review with the hiring manager. The hiring manager didn’t seem very interested in my work and responded plainly, like a robot. I felt a bit disrespected. I got a rejection email the next day.
- What's the most challenging aspect of your work?
Product Designer
Got an invite two days after applying. Then, I had a screening chat with a recruiter 4 days later. It was a 45-minute video call on Google Meet.
- What motivates your interest in this role?
- Can you describe any experience you have with UX research?
- Tell me about your remote product design experience.
Product Designer
The entire interview process spanned nearly 8 weeks during the summer of 2019. It involved two in-person meetings with the Lead Designer, two phone calls with HR and Management, a design test, and a few follow-up emails. I thought the design test was basically free consulting work, and it felt like they give it to everyone even if they've already decided not to hire them. After I presented my design test work, the lead designer emailed me with follow-up questions about the strategy and what I would do in certain scenarios. In the end, after 8 weeks, the recruiting process concluded with a standard rejection email from HR. While I'm okay with not getting the job and I'm sure they found someone better, I expected a more personal closing note from the lead designer after such a lengthy process, free work, and meeting them three times, instead of a templated HR email.
- Can you walk me through your design process?
- What makes you want to join Hopper?
- Could you present and discuss some of your portfolio projects?
