First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Hong Kong Polytechnic.
Design Manager
The first interview was a Zoom call where they asked general questions about my professional experience and some simple questions to test my construction and design knowledge. They mentioned they are looking for someone who is well-rounded with experience in design, M&E, structure, and especially A&A works. The second interview was in person and involved more specific questions about how I would handle a fast-paced design and construction development.
- How would you handle a request to lower the cost of the design proposal?
Research Assistant
The process for becoming a Research Assistant is pretty simple. You typically start by looking for RA openings on the university or lab's website, then you either submit an application or send an email directly to the professor. If they're interested, they'll respond to schedule an interview, and most of this initial communication happens via email. There's usually only one interview round, which can be done either online or in person, whatever is more convenient for everyone involved.
- Tell me about your research background.
- What technical skills do you have, maybe from your final year project or any publications?
- How do your interests match up with the work this lab does?
Scholar Trainee
The interview process included a series of questions designed to understand my background and suitability for the internship. I was asked to elaborate on my personal history, educational journey, and any relevant experiences. I also had to explain my specific interest in this role and my desire to work at KPMG, connecting it to my long-term career aspirations. Furthermore, I was prompted to share instances where I successfully managed multiple responsibilities under stress, detailing my prioritization strategies. Questions also touched upon my ability to adapt and collaborate with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, using my assistant manager experience as a reference. I was asked to describe a significant challenge I encountered and my approach to resolving it, with a specific example of managing unforeseen event changes. Finally, I needed to discuss recently acquired skills and how I've implemented them, referencing my Power BI learning experience.
- Could you tell me about yourself, emphasizing your background, education, and experiences pertinent to this internship?
- What draws you to this particular role and to KPMG? Please elaborate on your motivations for applying and how this internship fits with your career aspirations.
- Can you describe a situation where you had to juggle multiple tasks while under pressure? Explain your approach to prioritizing and achieving success.
Accountant
The interview had a 1-hour written test with 3 job-related questions, followed by a 30-minute interview. The interview included introducing myself, discussing past job experiences, and reasons for leaving my previous role. The hiring manager was pleasant and clearly explained the job duties and their expectations. However, a higher-level manager was disrespectful and dismissive of my experience, focusing only on education, even though all candidates met the basic requirements. I feel it would be more professional to discuss any concerns after the interview, rather than during it. The higher-level manager's behavior was impolite and unprofessional. This is a contract position with below-market salary, so consider carefully before applying.
- Please introduce yourself.
- Can you tell me about your previous work experience and how it relates to this position?
- What prompted your departure from your most recent job?
