First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Honda of America Mfg..
Engineering Co-Op
I applied online and got a call to schedule a phone interview. The interview started with them asking about my resume and my experiences in student groups. Then, they asked a lot of STAR questions. They took a while to get back to me, so I called to check the status, and they told me to wait again. The next day, I got an email saying I didn't get the offer.
- Tell me about a time you had to handle a situation where two team members had different ideas.
Engineering
About 2-3 weeks after applying online, I got a call to confirm application details like citizenship and any past convictions. Then, I was set up for a phone interview the next week. The phone interview had about 5-7 behavioral questions, and the interviewer talked about the job afterward. It lasted 45 mins to an hour, including time for my questions. About two weeks later, they contacted me to set up an on-site interview and arrange travel (Honda paid for it all). The on-site interview involved deep behavioral questions from a panel of managers. It went a bit over an hour, plus time for my questions. The interviewers were nice, making it comfortable. After the interview, I got a quick tour of the manufacturing plant.
- Why do you think you're the best candidate for this position?
Project Engineer
This was for an engineering managing position in car painting at a Japanese car manufacturer that's expanding. The interview process started with a standard mail application to a CP address, as I got the interview through word of mouth. I prepared thoroughly, in a Japanese style. First, there was a 1:1 face-to-face interview with the HR Manager, which was a formal discussion about my professional background. I also got a tour of the office area, which was an open-plan setup. Everyone wore a standard light-colored uniform. The second interview had two parts. Part one was a 3:1 session with the HR Manager, Technical Director, and Engineering Manager. We discussed general engineering questions about manufacturing, assembly, and high-precision operations, as well as teamwork and problem-solving skills in an open environment. Part two was a 5:1 session with a North-American VP of Operations and a Japanese VP of Operations. This round focused on project engineering aspects like time and budget management, highlighting the different management perspectives between North-American (non-programmed decision-making) and Japanese (programmed decision-making) approaches. It was a professional, challenging, and positive experience overall.
- Can you state the precise code of conduct relevant to this role?
- Walk me through setting up a robot-managed painting line, from the initial concept to a fully operational system, within a $2 million budget.
