I had a 40-minute call with a Senior ML Engineer at this startup, who was the only other person on the team there. I was expecting a quick chat about my projects and internship experience, but instead, I had to drone out textbook definitions of machine learning concepts. He didn't ask about my projects, introduce himself, or mention the company. He did ask about my past internship, but he seemed inattentive, as I had to repeat my responsibilities multiple times. There were no critical thinking questions, like 'what model would you use in this scenario?', just reciting terms and concepts. By the end, I knew I wouldn't want to work there even if offered. He hung up without saying much. Possibly the worst interview I've had.

First, there was a phone call where the interviewer introduced the team. I talked about one of my projects and answered follow-up questions. They also asked a lot of standard machine learning questions. The second round was a take-home project related to their product, and I had a week to complete it. The third round involved presenting the take-home project to the group and then discussing it with them.

Confirmed questions2 questions
  • Can you explain how to prevent overfitting?
  • Basic machine learning concepts

The interview process started with a 30-minute phone screen where they asked about my past projects and then really grilled me on machine learning algorithms. After that, there was a take-home coding challenge. I got a problem statement and a dataset related to an NLP application for their business. I could use any language like Python or R.

Confirmed questions3 questions
  • Can you discuss a past project you've worked on?
  • Could you elaborate on the mathematics and underlying intuition of common machine learning algorithms?
  • Address a business problem using NLP with the provided dataset.
