First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at High Voltage.
3D Artist
The interviewer seemed unprepared and not knowledgeable for this high-level role. They initially mistook me for someone else. After introductions, they finally looked at my portfolio and asked questions that indicated a lack of subject matter expertise. Despite my initial enthusiasm, the interviewer seemed disinterested throughout, making for an unprofessional and almost disrespectful experience.
- Do you even know what a bake is?
Software Engineer
I emailed the hiring manager a few times with my resume and portfolio. About two weeks later, I heard back and got scheduled for a phone screening. The call was super short, maybe 10 minutes, and since I was local, they invited me in for an in-person interview. I went in late October and had a few rounds of pretty easy questions. One of the managers was a bit condescending about my resume, but otherwise, the interviewers seemed impressed with my basic CS and engineering skills. I passed and sent a thank you note, then just waited. It took over two months before I followed up with an email, and then suddenly they wanted to discuss hiring, with the goal of me starting about three weeks later.
- Can you explain how to reverse a linked list?
- Describe how you would code a jet pack controller for a video game.
Designer Assistant
The role was advertised on their website and the HR department was very quick to respond. I received a link with instructions for a design test, where I had to create a game design. After completing my design, I attended the scheduled review session. Many candidates were there, and they were being interviewed by different people simultaneously in various locations. I was asked to present a walk-through of my game design and answer questions about different parts of it. The interview primarily focused on queries about my game design decisions.
- The candidate was asked to explain the reasoning behind prioritizing art over gameplay.
- Explain the rationale for concentrating on the artistic elements rather than the core gameplay mechanics.
- What was the justification for emphasizing the visual aesthetics over the interactive elements of the game?
Game Designer
I applied in October because some friends who work there suggested it. I had a phone interview with the systems design lead. They told me I made it to the second round after a good interview and I'd hear back in a few weeks. But the second round never happened. Instead, HR strung me along for six months, always saying I'd get an update in 'a few weeks.' I eventually tried to reach out to the systems lead through my friend, only to find out he left the company soon after my interview. A week after that, I got an automated rejection email.
- Can you design a new character skill for a recently played game?
