The hiring manager reached out to me directly on LinkedIn about a marketing role. I had 6 45-minute interviews with different individuals and everyone was a pleasure to talk to. However, this was only the “second round” of interviews — the interview process is quite cumbersome, especially for someone who is currently working. After the second round I received a rejection due to lack of experience in a particular area, which could have been determined in the first interview. I would recommend streamlining this process in the future to avoid so many unnecessary interviews.

The interview process was pretty chill and conversational. We started with them telling me about the firm and what they do. Then they asked me stuff about my background, my school, and my portfolio. They wanted to know about my experience with software like Rhino, Revit, and Adobe Suite, and if I could work well with others. They also had me talk about a project I did before, what my design ideas were, what was tough, and how I figured it out. To wrap it up, we chatted about when I could start and what I was hoping to get out of the internship.

Confirmed questions3 questions
  • I talked about a project, explaining the idea, how the design changed, and how it fit with the location.
  • I explained my process for handling the project requirements, picking materials, and arranging spaces to make sure it was functional and looked good.
  • I shared my problem-solving abilities, talking about issues like site limitations and how I came up with clever design solutions.

I applied for a job at HGA and a recruiter set up an interview for a role I was a good fit for. I spent 10 minutes pitching myself for it. Then the recruiter told me the role I applied for was already filled, but there was another open role I didn't have experience in. I was annoyed but polite and said I'd still like to meet the team to learn more about it. I had already spent a couple of days preparing for the original role. Very unprofessional. I hope this isn't typical of their business culture.

The interview process felt thorough and personable. It started with a recruiter call, then an interview with the department manager. Two more interviews followed with the department manager and the department principal. The last interview was with the two design principals. I ended up meeting with HGA five times in total. HGA was upfront about discussing my salary expectations early on before diving too deep into the interview stages. For me, finding a good fit in terms of personality and career growth opportunities was crucial, especially since this role involved leadership responsibilities. I really appreciated having multiple interviews.
