First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Helzberg.
Sales Associate
I previously worked as a temporary holiday sales associate. I was interviewed by a store manager, who was my peer a few years back. I was quite disappointed with the manager's attitude. Given my 16 years of experience in fine jewelry, I felt I wasn't treated with the respect a seasoned sales professional deserves. The manager offered fewer hours than advertised and spoke discouragingly. They also mentioned I'd be expected to do office work, which wasn't in the job post. I went through the whole process, but never got a callback for a second interview, which is unusual compared to other jewelers I've interviewed with.
- How flexible are you with your available hours?
- Can you describe your sales abilities?
- Would you be willing to assist with office tasks?
Sales Associate
The interview process had 3 interviews total. First, I talked to the store manager. She asked about how long I'd been in jewelry sales and what sold best. She also asked about my sales approach (soft vs. hard closer), my previous sales figures, and why I left my last job. She asked if I knew who Warren Buffet was and I didn't. Apparently, knowing about his purchase of Helzberg in 1995 is important. She also asked for an example of handling an angry customer. The second interview was an automated phone call, where I also think I agreed to a credit check (bad credit might disqualify you). This phone interview asked about my experiences with dishonest coworkers and how I reacted, my history with marijuana and if friends use it, if I've ever been fired, my views on marijuana legalization, and if I was being truthful, plus more anxiety-inducing questions. The third interview was with the regional manager, who asked similar questions to the first manager. This is where I got the job offer.
- What do you know about Warren Buffet?
Sales Associate
The process was disorganized and unorganized. The person scheduled to interview me wasn't available when I arrived for my appointment. As a fix, I ended up interviewing with a store associate who wasn't management and hadn't prepared any questions. Because of this, I wasn't interested anymore, and even though I went through with it, I didn't see myself wanting to work there. I was told the manager would call, but they never did. It was unprofessional.
- Tell me about the greatest challenge you faced in your previous job.
