Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Hearst.
Intern
It was a multi-stage process. The first recruiter interaction wasn't great, they seemed unsure about the role and asked technical questions that didn't really fit the job description. The hiring managers, however, were good and asked questions that were relevant.
- Can you tell me about your technical skills and any relevant experience you have?
Intern
The interview process was really short and sweet. I think my background really helped me out. The recruiter reached out via email after seeing my resume. There weren't any tricky questions, and I had relevant experience in the area they were looking for, plus they had some examples of my previous work. I was a bit worried because my writing experience was more in fashion, but it ended up being a pretty straightforward interview. After the initial chat, I heard back from her just once more. We stayed in touch until I arrived in the city. Everyone in the office was super helpful and made me feel welcome, not just left to figure things out on my own. I felt like I fit in easily after the interview and when I started working. The actual tasks weren't super demanding, mostly involving some physical work like lifting and organizing, and a lot of research, which I actually enjoyed.
- What draws you to home interiors or decor?
- What are your goals for this internship?
- Is there anyone you'd like to connect with during your time here?
Intern
I had applied for another internship a year ago and didn't get it. They called me up to see if I was interested in interviewing for this new role. Turns out HR kept my resume. It was pretty cool they did that, and it was all over the magazines.
- Can you share some stories from your past internship experiences?
- What are you currently studying, and how do you see it benefiting this internship?
- Let's chat for a bit, say 20 minutes, to see if we vibe.
