Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Hearst.
Content Writer
It was pretty easy. I had one interview where they asked general questions about my experience and my editing process. Then, I did a short assignment to check my editing skills. A week later, I got an email saying I got the job.
- Can you describe your editing process?
Content Creator
I had a nice initial phone chat with a recruiter, then went in person to meet with the editor-in-chief, who's my direct manager. It was pretty chill, we just talked. First, I spoke with my potential direct bosses, and then had a separate one-on-one. During that chat, they seemed hesitant about offering me the job because they felt there wasn't much innovation or growth potential for the editorial team. I tried to reassure them that I could totally handle the challenges and help digitize and transform the editorial for better growth.
- Can you tell me about yourself and what skills you bring to the table?
- How do you see yourself contributing to the digitization and transformation of the editorial content?
- Are you confident in your ability to drive innovation and growth within the editorial department?
Content Manager
30 min phone call with the recruiter. Then a 1.5 hr in-person interview with the hiring manager, followed by a 1 hr phone interview with the hiring manager. I felt like the hiring manager was data-mining me for best practices and info on how to do the new job. I was ghosted after that.
- Can you tell me about your experience creating digital pop-culture news?
- What strategies would you use to relaunch a pop news show?
- Describe your approach to mentoring and managing on-camera talent.
