First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Health Canada.
Policy Analyst
The interview process was straightforward and went smoothly. They often share the questions or topics in advance, which helps with preparation. It's a very structured process, and they typically ask around 5 questions. These questions usually cover knowledge-based topics (like your understanding of toxic health products), skill-based assessments, and behavioral evaluations. They might also start with a 'tell me about yourself' and 'why you want this role' segment.
- Can you introduce yourself and explain why you believe you are the best candidate for this position?
Regulatory Officer
The interview was a single online panel. It consisted of general behavioral questions along with some technical questions about the department. It was fairly straightforward, mostly focused on STAR-based scenario questions. If I were to do this interview again, I would practice general behavioral questions.
- Can you describe how you handle working under pressure?
- What's your process for deciding which priorities to address first?
- Describe a situation where you were managing multiple projects simultaneously.
Data Scientist
The interview process was managed through the co-op portal, and the interview itself was conducted in person at the university. They had a set of questions prepared and gave me 10 minutes to get my thoughts together before answering. The questions were more like case study problems, not the usual 'tell me about yourself' type questions.
- Considering overdoses in the US, what factors or data points would you take into account?
Analyst
I was provided an interview time that conflicted with my availability and had to rearrange my schedule on short notice, less than a business day to prepare. During the interview, the hiring manager asked basic questions like strengths/weaknesses and proudest accomplishment, which could have been answered by reviewing my resume. It seemed like a prescreening since they were looking for experience in C#, .NET, and Selenium, which my resume did not reflect. My advice to hiring managers is to properly vet candidates for specific skills before scheduling interviews to save everyone time.
- Could you describe your strengths and weaknesses?
- What accomplishment are you most proud of?
- Can you tell us about your experience with C#, .NET, and Selenium?
