First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at HCSS.
Software Developer
So, first there was this math test, like word problems you had to set up as algebra to solve. Then a quick 15-minute chat, and a few days later, a more technical phone interview. The first call was pretty chill, but the second person felt super scripted, asking about algorithms and data structures. I answered okay given how rushed it was. Honestly, if you're not coming straight out of school with a STEM degree, and especially if you don't have a CS or engineering degree, it's probably not worth the hassle of the tests. I'm older too, so maybe that was an issue. If you're a recent grad with a STEM degree though, you've got a better shot.
- Can you define what classes are?
- Explain what data structures are.
- Could you discuss the first project detailed on your resume?
Software Engineer
So the interview process had a bunch of parts. First, there was this online math test with 14 questions. If you did well on that, they'd give you a call for a phone interview. After that, there might be some on-site interviews too. The on-site interviews were about 3 hours long total. I had three interviews: one with the team leader, another with the head of software development, and the last one with the supervisor of development. They asked behavioral stuff, some technical questions and definitions, and about my personal projects. Honestly, the interviews weren't too tough, just really direct and honest.
- Tell me about your experience with team projects and what your role was.
- Can you explain the different kinds of linked lists and how to reverse one?
Software Engineer
It was pretty relaxed! I started with a phone call with an HR recruiter, which was more like a casual chat about my interests in the software/construction industry. That was followed by a video call with two people that I would potentially be working with/under at the company, part of which included a coding challenge that was fairly reasonable. Following this, I received an offer.
- In five years, where do you envision yourself?
- What makes you interested in software within the construction industry?
- What is your understanding of the construction industry?
