HR first reached out for a quick chat to see if I'd be a good fit personality-wise. After that went well, I had a virtual interview over Zoom with three different managers from the Tech Support team. Each manager had their own set of questions for me. One part of the interview involved a logic puzzle where I had to ask yes/no questions to guess an item from a supermarket that the interviewer was thinking of. Another manager wanted to gauge my knowledge about the company, and the last one asked about my career aspirations and previous job experience.

I scheduled a skills test online to take at their office. It had 14 questions and a 45-minute limit. The first questions were simple, but the last few were confusing. For example, one question asked about the true cost of a bid given expenses and equipment cost, but I wasn't sure how the equipment cost factored in. I'm good at algebra, but the question needed better explanation or a formula. I don't know the passing score, but I assume it's 100%. After the test, the secretary told me to check my account for results later that day. I checked after about 3 hours and didn't pass. I checked again 8 hours later, and my account was no longer valid. I'd like another chance, but I doubt they'd allow it since tests probably don't change. The last question on the test was similar to the sample question on their website for the Technical Support Specialist role, but it was more complicated with extra benefits/taxes for a company with a base rate of $13/hour. I didn't know about these terms since I haven't worked in HR. A straightforward algebra problem would have been easy, but the confusing terms made it difficult. Another reviewer passed, so maybe I'm just not seeing something, but others should be warned.

  • Given a contractor's bid of x, expenses y and z, and equipment cost w, what was the actual cost of the bid?
  • Considering an annual salary of $32,000, company-paid insurance benefits of $3,536, 32% of base salary in 401K/Profit Sharing/ESOP, and 8% of base salary in FICA taxes, plus 4 months of training, 7 holidays, and 10 days of sick leave/vacation in the first year (assuming 176 work hours/month and 8 hours/day), calculate the company's cost per hour for the time the employee is available to help a customer.
  • The sample question on their website details calculating an employee's first-year cost per hour to the company, including salary, benefits, FICA taxes, training, holidays, and leave. How would you approach answering a similar question on the actual test that uses slightly different numbers and includes additional benefits/taxes for a company with a $13/hour base rate?

First, you submit your application online and then sign up for a time slot to complete a skills test at the location. Once HCSS posts your results online and you pass, they'll set up a telephone interview. After that, HCSS will schedule a face-to-face meeting where you'll meet several people from the department you might join. Expect to talk with about 6 different individuals, and you'll need to convince each one why you're a great fit for the company. Finally, you'll get a call or email from HR with your starting salary and date, and you'll need to email back if you accept. The offer is usually good for a week.
