I applied for an Unreal Software Engineer role. At first, I thought graphics and rendering experience wasn't needed. During a long technical interview, they even said this background wasn't necessary. But later, the feedback said I lacked graphics expertise, even though my resume was focused on UI and tooling. There was also a coding task where I did a more optimized solution, but they said I used a 'brute force' approach. It felt like a big mismatch in expectations. They should really check qualifications more carefully before interviewing to save everyone time.

After I applied, an HR person reached out and we set up a call for the next day. We talked about my resume, past jobs, company benefits, what I wanted to make, and other basic stuff. Then, they set up a technical interview for about 90 minutes over Google Meets with two SW engineers. We chatted about my background, some behavioral questions, and I got to ask about the company. I had to do a task that wasn't too hard in a live VS Code in the browser. The setup had no autocomplete, I couldn't compile code myself, and it was a bit slow and glitchy. The task itself was straightforward but I got stuck on a small detail that should have been easier, wasting a lot of time. It didn't go great overall, and I got rejected by email a few days later. Still, the interviewers were mostly nice and helpful, making it a good experience.

I had a first chat with the HR manager about my background and the role. Then, I met with the ML Lead and two engineers. They asked a lot of hypothetical questions about using ML for their specific use cases, like ball tracking and data annotation pipelines, and also about CNNs versus Transformers. The team was really nice and I felt comfortable talking to them. Even though the hiring manager thought I might not have enough experience for the role, I still got to the next stage. I think that stage went pretty well, but in the end, I got an email saying I lacked sufficient experience. They did give me some good feedback in the email, and the whole experience was pleasant.

Standard application process to start. I sent in my CV and a Cover Letter. A week or two later, I got an email with a questionnaire to get to know me better and expand on my CV with past experiences. Along with the questionnaire, I had to come up with an innovation in sport to help officiating, which I then presented in my interview. The interview itself was conducted remotely over Skype because I was abroad at the time. Lastly, there was a remote technical assessment where I was given basic instructions on how to use their custom software and had to complete a task. It was a bit tricky, but following the instructions carefully made it manageable. Knowing about IP addresses might be useful here.
