First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Hatch.
Software Engineer Intern
They kicked things off by chatting about the role, then dove into questions about how familiar I am with certain engineering concepts and how I feel about working on-site. They also asked about my coding background and what I see myself doing career-wise down the road.
- Which project are you most proud of having worked on?
- Can you elaborate on your understanding of key engineering principles?
- What are your thoughts on the requirement to be present on-site?
Software Engineer
It was a typical phone screen with programming trivia, an easy technical algo question, and a vague system design. One strange thing was they repeated a question (not my strong suit) from an earlier interview during later ones to see if I had 'researched' things. I was out of town visiting family that weekend, so no, I didn't have time to research my weaker areas. Maybe if that's what you want, provide clear instructions for the next interview. Just hoping for a spontaneous moment to show I'm qualified isn't the best approach. Developers are people with busy lives outside of work. Anyway, some of the current developers were really nice, and we had some genuine conversations. It was pretty straightforward overall. If you want an offer, just make sure to study a lot of unrelated information outside your expertise. It helps a lot to pretend you're an expert in things you'll never need – I mean, to get an offer.
- Can you explain the difference between Javascript's Promise and Observables?
- What distinguishes delete, drop, and truncate in SQL?
- In what scenarios would a map be preferable to a list, and what are the performance advantages of each?
Software Engineer
The interview process was quite friendly and welcoming. It started with some small talk about the weather in my city. Then, two engineers from Hatch shared information about the company's structure. They were trying to understand how I would fit into the company culture. The conversation flowed back and forth, with them explaining their roles and responsibilities while also asking me about the company's areas of work. It felt more like a relaxed conversation than a rigorous interview, as they were more interested in connecting with me as a person. The key is to understand the underlying intent of their questions and relate your answers back to the company for a stronger impact.
- How do your strengths and weaknesses align with contributing to Hatch's projects, considering the four key roles: Manager, Scheduler, Questioner, and Doer?
- Can you elaborate on your capabilities in being a manager, scheduler, questioner, or doer within a project context?
