Energy Operator
They test you on python and excel without notice. They keep mentioning they have an intern on hold for the role, so why interview in the first place? They don't even read your CV before the interview. Big waste of time. Great firm, but poor department. They can't seem to hire someone, even though there is only 1 position available. They have an external recruitment agency and an internal recruiter and yet this is the fourth or fifth recruitment attempt in a short time span, which speaks for itself really. Interview was quite hostile and actually made me feel uncomfortable.

- Why this firm, what is the role?
Energy Operator
I applied through a recruitment agency who set up a 30-min Teams meeting with Hartree. The meeting link didn't work for them initially, and after about 15 minutes, the interviewers joined, saying they were rushed due to back-to-back interviews. The interview was quite short, and I was interrupted often, making it hard to answer fully. They spent a lot of time on a previous job of mine that I felt wasn't relevant to this role. Midway through, they got distracted by an 'emergency email' they had to deal with, and the interview was cut even shorter. I know they sometimes try to trip people up, but this felt like more than that.
- Could you tell me what Hartree does and what your responsibilities would be?
- What is your understanding of the energy industry?
- Have you had experiences working under tight deadlines before?
Consultant
This was the most horrific interview experience of my career. The interviewer from the Middle East team, who identified as a manager, seemed more interested in judging and humiliating me than listening or evaluating. It was so bad I had to end the interview myself, stating that the attitude and tone were unacceptable. If a company wants to hire good people, they should train their interviewers. Bullying candidates doesn't show you're a great company; it shows a toxic culture with immature employees.
- What does sustainability mean to you?
- What drives your continuous learning?
- What is the ultimate goal of your continuous learning?
Energy Analyst
I got this interview through a recruiter and talked with the traders I would be working with. It began with us getting to know each other, discussing the role, and my experience. Most questions were about how you think, not your knowledge of energy markets. I got past this part and was going to travel to Houston to meet the partners, but the market dropped, the offer was put on hold, and I moved on. If this hadn't happened, I liked the guys and would have probably taken the job.
- Why are manhole covers round? Are there other shapes that could work?
