Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Harlem Village Academies.
Teacher
The interview process involved two main stages: an initial phone call and a subsequent visit. The visit included a demonstration lesson. Candidates also participated in a group discussion with the department members and had an individual meeting with the academic director. Following the interview, an offer was extended approximately three days later. There was a substantial conversation with the academic director regarding the role's responsibilities. A formal written offer was sent the very next day.
- What are your strategies for managing a classroom effectively?
- Looking back at your demo lesson, what aspects would you have enhanced?
Teacher
We talked about my lesson plan and education philosophy. Then we chatted about student and academic culture. I had a one on one interview. I also got to pop out of the building and observe some classrooms.
- How do you handle behavior management?
Teacher
First, I had a phone chat with a recruiter. They asked about my work history, how I deal with tough situations, and for examples of accomplishments. Then, I came in for an in-person interview where I did a read-aloud demonstration for a class. After that, I got a tour of the school and then had a final meeting with the principal.
- Describe a situation where you encountered a difficulty and outline the actions you took to get past it.
