Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Harlem Children's Zone.

There was one interviewer asking questions, but several other people were watching the zoom call. They asked about my teaching style and also had me do a mock lesson. It wasn’t too hard, but they did ask questions about how I would be as a teacher.
- Can you describe your teaching style?
Teacher
It was a really chill interview. I got contacted by a recruiter after sending in my resume. The principal asked me what I knew about the school and also described the kids as inner-city and entitled, saying they are spoiled because they get so many services in the program. Then, I was asked about my classroom management style, how I build relationships, and other questions. It wasn't until the very end that I found out it was for an ASSISTANT teacher role, not a CO-TEACHER position as the recruiter had implied.
- Can you share an instance where you had to re-teach a concept based on evaluating student work?
Teacher
I applied online and within a week, I got a call for a phone interview. Then, I was asked to come in for a demo/in-person interview right away. The interview felt like I was an inconvenience. Nobody was ready, and it started late. The person who was supposed to interview me didn't, but another team member watched my demo lesson and filmed it. I felt like I did okay, but I wasn't sure if I got the job afterwards.
- Can you introduce yourself and explain your path to teaching?
