I went to Hard Rock Cafe, filled out a form, and met an Assistant General Manager. He asked me some standard questions about why I wanted to work there, my past jobs, and some personal stuff like hobbies and favorite bands. Then, the General Manager hired me right away. I guess they really needed servers. A few days later, I went back and sat down with another new server hire. We got served a bunch of different dishes, and the manager explained each one while we ate. After that, we got our training schedules, uniforms, and manuals. We were told to study the food and store rules before our first training shifts. The training itself is tough and long, lasting 7 days. Depending on how you perform, they might offer you more later. Each training day starts early, with a trainer going over what you'll focus on. They'll quiz you to see if you've studied the food items. During the shift, you're supposed to shadow and help a server, and they'll keep quizzing you. You get to eat free menu items during breaks or after the shift. When I trained, my trainer and I picked an appetizer, main course, and dessert to try. At the end of each day, you meet with a manager to get quizzed again and discuss how the shift went and if the trainer helped you learn. On days 5 and 6, you start taking tables yourself. Hopefully, your trainer is good and trusts you with their tables. Make sure to respect their sections and cover everything. You'll have chances later to be independent, so practice the right way during training. On day 7, you'll handle a whole section with your trainer watching.

Applied online. A couple weeks later, I got an email to call and set up an interview. A few days after that, I interviewed in the food court with the cage supervisor. They asked me 12 questions and I took a 20-question math test with a 20-minute time limit, which included currency and token-based problems. The supervisor then explained the job and benefits. I was told I'd get an email within two weeks about whether I got the job.

It was a big interview group all set for the same day. We got a quick talk about company culture before interviews kicked off. Each person went station to station, meeting a few managers who asked questions for about 10 minutes. I got the job offer right then. A friend who came with me also interviewed and didn't get hired, though we had similar backgrounds. This was ages ago.
- Can you describe your experience working in busy restaurants?
