First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Handel Architects.
Intern
The interviewers were approachable. They asked general questions like who you are, about your background, and to present two projects from your portfolio. They also inquired about your work interests at the company. Overall, it was a positive experience.
- Could you introduce yourself?
- Can you describe your previous experience?
- Please present two of your portfolio projects.
Associate
I met with one of the principals. We talked about my work and academic portfolios, and they asked me some questions. We also discussed team culture, workflow, software and skills, and salary and hours expectations.
- Can you tell me about your previous work experience?
- Would you like to see my portfolio work?
- Can we review my academic portfolio?
Project Architect
I applied online and heard back about a week later to schedule an interview with a senior associate. The interview covered my motivation, how I'd fit the firm's current projects, and my interest in their work. After the interview, I got a quick office tour and learned about the studio setup. Everyone I met was nice and easy to communicate with.
- Could you tell me about your previous experience and your specific role and responsibilities on the projects you've worked on?
- When presenting your portfolio projects, can you give me an example that shows your ability to lead a design scope as a self-sufficient, senior-level designer?

It was a messy interview process. There was a lot of back and forth trying to set up the first phone call. The hiring manager couldn't make up his mind and kept changing it. Then, I had to do the whole thing over for the face-to-face interviews, which also had last-minute changes to the schedule. I had to resubmit my documents three times because the hiring manager didn't want to look through his old emails. During the face-to-face, one interviewer was barefoot, and another kept dropping F-bombs when talking about his ideas. Don't expect much from this company, but be ready to jump through hoops.
- Can you write?
- How do you handle collaborating with multiple offices?
