Interview was very interesting and the environment was good. The panelists were super soft about asking about my experience. One of them asked about financial terms, which I explained like a teacher in simple terms. The panelists told me to pursue teaching rather than banking.

The process began with submitting my resume through the official HBL careers portal, though an internal referral could also expedite things. Next, an HR screening via a phone call (around 15-20 minutes) was conducted to confirm resume details, salary expectations, and availability; it was very basic and professional. In some cases, a technical assessment or test was given, covering programming logic, database queries, and system design basics, using HackerRank or a custom HBL platform. Then, a technical interview happened, either virtually or at HBL Plaza, Karachi, with 2-3 panel members like a team lead and senior architect. Questions focused on the software development lifecycle, technologies on the CV, real-world problem-solving, system design, DevOps/CI/CD, and financial application experience (which was a plus). Lastly, a managerial or department head interview focused on project experience, communication, leadership, and culture fit, potentially including strategic questions like improving legacy banking systems or working with cross-functional teams.

Confirmed questions3 questions
  • How can we automate a manual financial process?
  • How would you integrate a new system into HBL's core banking infrastructure?
  • How would you approach migrating services to a CI/CD pipeline?

I did an online test that was based on c-factor. After that, I had an assessment center at HBL head office. This included two parts: first a 20minute group discussion and then a presentation on the brand statement about going digital. Second, a business strategy Game called "Go Fishing" (you can google The Fish Banks Ltd. Game). Finally, there was a Panel interview. The panel had 3 senior managers and one HR person.

Confirmed questions2 questions
  • Can you describe the functions of Corporate Banking and elaborate on your answers regarding the role and your motivation for applying?
  • Could you explain basic finance concepts such as WACC and IRR?
