Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Grubhub.
Sales
They already had someone in mind and were just going through the motions, which felt like a waste of my time. They mentioned I was overqualified. I had to give a presentation, but they weren't even paying attention. They asked a few questions and didn't seem engaged at all during the call.
- Can you introduce yourself and explain your motivation for joining this company?
Sales Representative
I applied for the Online Restaurant Sales Representative role at Grubhub via LinkedIn and a recruiter contacted me. We set up a 30-minute call for about 1-2 weeks later, but it only took 15 minutes and was basically a quick chat to see if I was a good fit for the next step. The next interviews were two 30-minute Zoom calls with sales managers. The first was pretty easy, mostly just getting to know each other and some basic questions, and the second one was also straightforward. I got the job offer the very next day!
- What makes you want to join Grubhub?
- How would you approach a restaurant owner during a cold call?
- Can we do a role-play exercise?
Inside Sales Representative
The first interview was a quick 20-minute phone screening. The second interview was strange. I expected two interviewers, but there were four people from the start because one was training others. The interviewer seemed rushed. Even though I was overqualified for this entry-level role, I didn't get an offer. It felt like a waste of time, possibly to meet an interview quota. One interviewer was great, but the woman kept asking about my life's purpose, which I had to answer multiple times. During a role-play, I had to do a one-call close. I successfully handled all objections and added value each time. I was told I should have set a callback time, which would be obvious in a live call. This hiring process explains why Grubhub is struggling against competitors like Uber Eats and DoorDash; they can't even hire effectively for basic sales roles. It's their loss.
- How would you respond if Grubhub doesn't align with your life's purpose?
