The whole interview thing took about 5 weeks. They were really thorough. First, I had an initial chat on webcam, just to see if we were a fit. Then, I met with the local branch manager, a hiring specialist, and the VP of Sales. I also got to shadow a salesperson for half a day, which gave me a good feel for the company and their work. It was a good experience overall, and the company seems great – the employees looked really happy.

I got a call and screened for the first interview. Then I had a skype interview that went well. After that, I scheduled a face-to-face interview with a local manager. They emailed me applications to fill out, but then they called and canceled the interview because I smoke. It was strange because they asked about driving and vehicle history on the application, and I didn't realize they were a tobacco-free company. The manager said I wasn't eligible for employment. It sucked because they should have asked me that in the first interview instead of wasting my time. I was really excited about the opportunity. They mentioned the average salary with commission was between $60k-$80k in the first year and $80k-$100k after.

Let's dig in to see why the second response is more powerful. To start, the word "helped" (which is seen in the first response) is vague. To an interviewer, this could mean that you presented a list of powerful ideas—but it could also signify that you were a near-silent participant on a conference call to discuss the campaign. The second option uses a more active verb—a person generating ideas is deeply involved in the project. Plus, powerful adjectives are added; not only did you come up with ideas, but they were good ones!
