Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Greggs.
Assistant Manager
The staff were unhappy and seemed to discourage me from finishing my assessment. The pay is low for the long hours, and the interviewer was not personable. It felt like a waste of my time and effort, so I won't reapply because of this experience. There's also very little chance of progression in this role.
- Can you describe a time when...?
People Manager
The hiring process itself consisted of lengthy 3 stage interviews. First was a meeting with the Senior People Manager to discuss the role and to assess my suitability for it. Second was a trip to site to present a presentation and answer some competency based questions. This visit also included a tour around the site which was informative and useful. Third was a meeting with the Senior People Manager and the Head of People to run through my suitability once again and to answer questions I had already answered multiple times throughout the process. I was told I would hear back either way pretty much immediately as they needed to recruit. I thought very highly of Greggs until they decided not to get back to me to tell me whether I was successful or not or to provide any type of constructive feedback. I think it is overall disrespectful and rude to expect somebody to invest significant time and effort in preparing a presentation, taking time to sit through an intensive 3 stage process and commute an hour to the site to never hear from them again. Whilst I may not have been the best candidate for the role, I would have expected the courtesy of a follow up call. I do not recommend interviewing with this company although the employees that gave me a tour around site were friendly and personable and I appreciated their time.
- How would you improve employee engagement?
Assistant Manager
I had a phone interview first, lasted about 45 mins cuz I couldn't make it in person. It was mostly about me and my past jobs, and a lot about how I'd motivate my team, like 4 questions just on that. Then I had another interview at a Greggs store with an Area Manager. We talked about me and my experience again, and I had to explain how my non-retail/catering background fit the job. That took 20-30 mins. Next was a 20-min shop floor observation where I had to note things down and suggest improvements for sales, staff, and the shop in general – they want to see if you have 'manager eyes'. Like I saw some produce missing the 'Freshly made today in store' stickers. We then discussed my notes and observations. The whole thing took 2 hours.
- What are your strategies for motivating employees?
- How would you maintain high customer service standards in your absence?
- What steps would you take if you discovered a £100 discrepancy in a till after cashing up?
