Principal Software Engineer
So, working for a Vista Equity Partners company means you'll have to jump through a few hoops. First, you do an online personality and cognitive test, pay attention to the cognitive one, it's likely the CCAT. You get 15 minutes for 50 questions. Passing doesn't mean you get feedback right away, instead, HR calls you for a quick chat. If that goes well, you'll have to take a proctored version of the cognitive test. If you bomb this or your scores are way off from the first go, you're out. It's a bit of a bummer because even with tons of experience, if you can't perform under pressure on this test, you won't even get a real interview. If you pass, you get to meet the senior folks in person. It felt like a regular interview, actually pretty chill and I enjoyed chatting with everyone. Since they have multiple offices, some people join via Skype. They mostly talked about my past experience, no silly coding problems or tricky questions. After that, there's a coding test. This one's about solving a business problem, like building a typing test app with performance feedback. They give you a week to finish it.
- Can you tell me about the XYZ project?
- Describe your experience using XYZ technology.
- Tell me more about your work on project XYZ.
Software Engineer
First, I took an online assessment that included vocab, math, and pattern matching - pretty random stuff, but apparently mandatory. Then, a recruiter called me. After that, I had to retake the assessment, but this time it was proctored. Next, I had another call with the recruiter who then set up a phone interview with the hiring team. The phone interview happened, and then I got a coding challenge to complete within five days. Once I submitted that, I was invited for an in-person interview. During the onsite, they went over my code, asked how I'd improve it, and threw in some general CS and behavioral questions about teamwork. I got an offer a couple of days later but had to decline. The whole thing took about two weeks, which felt long but wasn't too bad. Everyone seemed great, and it felt like a good place to work.
- Can you explain SQL joins like inner, left, and right joins?
- Tell me about your previous projects.
- Describe a mistake you made in a project and what you learned.
Software Engineer
The interview process had 2 main parts. First, a Technical interview that lasted about 1 to 1.5 hours. This was a 1-on-1 session where they asked questions about the tech stack and one question from DSA. Second, there were 2 HR rounds. These covered salary structure and negotiation, and some normal questions like why I want to join the company and general questions about the company.
- Could you write a unit test to verify email functionality?
- Can you answer some questions about our tech stack?
- Do you have any questions related to Data Structures and Algorithms?
