Senior Software Engineer
Applied online, then a recruiter contacted me after a few days. We chatted about my background and the job details. After that, the recruiter asked some basic coding questions. I was then rejected a few days later.
- Could you explain what a hashmap is?
- What distinguishes 'const' from 'let' in JavaScript?
- Can you tell me about React Hooks?
Software Engineer
I received a phone call for an engineering role. The audio quality was really bad, which was surprising given it's a medium to large company. The call lasted about 30 minutes. I felt I was fully qualified, if not overqualified, for the entry-level position based on my experience. The interview covered my current role and education, so I was surprised not to advance to the next round. I'm trying to understand their interview process better. It raises questions about their inclusivity when someone who closely matches the job description isn't even given a chance for technical rounds.
- Can you introduce yourself?
- Can you describe a significant contribution you made to a past project?
- What are your views on workplace diversity?
Software Engineer
It began with a 30-minute phone screen with the hiring manager, covering the role and my background, with a few general technical questions. Next, I had a one-hour technical interview involving a live coding exercise with an engineering team member. The final stage included multiple cultural and technical interviews, spread over an 8-hour day to suit my schedule. These comprised three technical interviews with live coding and whiteboard design, plus three casual chats with hiring managers and various team members at Greenhouse. The entire process was very in-depth and gave me a good understanding of the company. The technical interviews felt practical, not just abstract problems, with reasonable time and skill expectations.
- What methods would you use to speed up a SQL query?
- Can you describe how you'd enhance the performance of a SQL query?
- How might you approach optimizing the speed of a SQL query?
