First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Great American Restaurants.
Server
I went to a Great American's and asked about hiring. The host got a manager who talked with me right away. He asked about my work history, how I do hospitality and customer service, my availability, and if I could commit for at least a year. Then he asked if I could meet the Assistant General Manager, who was also there. After about a 10-minute wait, she asked me similar questions but dug deeper into my food/drink knowledge, sales skills, and how I'd handle different guest or coworker situations. She was really nice, making me feel comfortable. She then asked if I could come back the next day to meet the General Manager. I agreed. My interview with the GM was quick. He said the other managers had a good impression of me. He double-checked a few things and then offered me the server job! We set up my training for a few days later. It was a fast and easy interview process!
- How do you connect with your guests?
- Can you suggest a simple food and wine pairing?
- How would you deal with conflicts with colleagues?
Server
The interview was a bit too intense, and the interviewer wasn't very likable; they seemed too stern and cocky. I didn't feel like someone like that would be a good manager in a customer service role and they didn't represent the company well. It makes me question their hiring process. I came in and had to wait for a manager to find me and call me over. Then, they sat me down at a dining table while other staff kept interrupting during the interview.
- Can you tell me about a very bad experience you've had in a restaurant setting?
Server
You'll have about 2-3 chats with the managers. They get how demanding the company is and want to see if you can keep up. They'll ask you to talk about times you worked really hard and how you dealt with tough situations.
- Tell me about your experience.
- Describe a time you had to work hard.
- How have you handled difficult situations in the past?
