First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Great American Group.
Intern
The hiring process was pretty fast. They looked at my resume and then I got called to interview the next week. The interviews happened back-to-back, and each one had two managers. Everyone was really nice and paid attention. They asked typical questions, mostly about business finance stuff since that's what the company does. The whole thing took about 1.5 hours. There was a short test before the interviews, which was super easy.
- Are there any general terms or factors of business I should know?
- What is seasonality?
- What is slow-moving inventory?
Sales Director
The process was really long but super thorough. I gave them all the info they needed about my work history, my network, and what I know about the industry. I had a bunch of phone interviews with people from the National Director all the way up to both CEOs of the parent companies. By the end, I knew who everyone was and what they did, and I got to know them pretty well too before starting. It's a fantastic job at a great company, I can't say enough good things. Even though it took a while at first, later interviews have been faster and easier.
- Can you tell me about your professional contacts?
Analyst
So I had this interview with two of the managers and they started off asking me some standard behavioral questions which I thought I did okay on and was kinda what I prepared for. Then they started asking me specific technical questions about excel like pivot tables and VLookup functions and also various accounting questions. They also asked me about my preferred office locations. I really didn't prepare for nor did I think they would ask so many technical questions in a first round interview. I guess I didn't do well enough because I wasn't asked back for a second interview.
- Regarding the valuation of a company, what specific accounting ratios would you examine?
- What kind of financial analysis would you incorporate into a recommendation to a supervisor regarding a company?
- If tasked with liquidating a company, what considerations would you need to account for concerning inventory and overhead?
Financial Analyst
We started with an on-campus interview to see if you'd be a good fit. They asked basic stuff like what you know about Great American. The second round was at their office in Woodland Hills. You had two hour-long interviews with two people each. They asked case questions about liquidating a company, like how you'd liquidate a pen company. The second round also had an Excel test and a test on reading income statements. Make sure you're pretty good at Excel. The third round was just one interview with the higher-ups, focusing again on behavioral questions, checking your fit, and getting a sense of whether you'd stay with the company after graduation.
- What factors influence the sale of assets during a liquidation scenario?
