Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Government of Alberta.
Lawyer
The interview process was comfortable and transparent. They were accommodating of my request to be 0.8 upon returning from maternity leave which I appreciated. They were detailed in explaining the position and what would be required so I felt I had a good understanding of the role.
- I don't recall the specific questions but I do recall feeling it was more of a conversation than a question-answer type interview.
Lawyer
I applied and was given an interview. Initially, they sent a time for the interview, and I'd get an acceptance or rejection. I was in court that day, so I had to reject it. Rescheduling was tricky; I had to contact HR to set up another date. The interview felt stiff, and I wasn't sure what was going on. They said they'd ask a certain number of questions but didn't make it clear that I was responsible for time management. It wasn't until halfway through that I was told to speed up. Afterward, they said I did well, but not well enough for an offer. Overall, the interview felt unfair and was frustrating because I was told I didn't do well due to their failure to explain the process clearly at the start. I talked to someone else interviewed for the same role, and they also found it confusing and unclear.
- Can you share an experience where...? What would you do in this situation?
- Would you consider other jobs or locations?
Lawyer
They asked a lot of competency-based questions, but it wasn't always clear which competency they were testing. I'd really suggest spending a lot of time reviewing which questions relate to which competency and have your answers ready.
- Can you tell me about a time you had to deal with a politically sensitive situation and how you handled it?
