Behavioral Technical Presentation

I got a phone call about a week after I applied, on a Saturday. The interview was on Monday, and I got there a little early. The manager said he preferred to get to know people rather than ask standard questions. He asked about my hobbies and future career goals. He did ask some regular interview questions too. I made sure to ask about the job, and he seemed happy about that. He complimented my professional outfit. He had a list of handwritten questions and marked them off as he asked and as I answered. I had researched the company beforehand. He started talking about the company, and when he said it's over a hundred years old, I told him the exact age. He seemed amused. He mixed up the President and CEO's names, and I gently corrected him because I had studied up. He grinned and asked what else I knew. When I explained I studied over the weekend, he asked why. I explained my reasoning about job competition and wanting to stand out. He asked if I had other interviews, which I did. He said he didn't want to miss out on hiring me and, despite company policy for two interviews, offered me the job on the spot. I accepted, and he told me to come back Thursday at 3 pm for paperwork, a drug test, and training videos.

Behavioral Technical

I had a great initial phone call with HR, they were really professional. The next week, I interviewed with a Regional Manager who was covering for the District Manager. This interview was very standard and situational. The manager mainly asked me if I was motivated by money or vacations. They didn't ask about my skills or past achievements, just presented scenarios and asked for my responses. The company seems to target recent grads who are okay with a lower starting salary, extensive training, and potential relocation. They were upfront about this, but it wasn't a good fit for me given my sales and sales management background.

The interview included questions that weren't really predictable. One question was about the difference between coworker and customer relationships. I was also asked to recall past experiences related to specific situations. Sadly, I didn't get the job, and the rejection letter was particularly bad. The HR department apparently didn't even fill in the blanks, so the letter read, 'We regret to inform you "fill in here" that you...'. This made me question if the company was a good fit after all, given their lack of attention to detail.

Confirmed questions8 questions
  • Could you explain the distinction between a relationship with a coworker versus one with a customer?
  • What are your career aspirations for the next five years?
  • What feedback do you think your previous supervisor would give about you?
