Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Gloria Jean's Coffees.
Barista
it was straightforward, they asked about my past experiences and if I could handle a fast-paced setting. Mostly, it was to confirm my availability and schedule rather than checking if I fit the company culture.
- Can you tell me about your availability for this role?
Barista
I applied online and also handed in my CV in store. I got a call for an interview two days later. The interview was set for 10 AM, so I got to the café at 9:45 AM. But when I arrived, they told me the manager had already left and wouldn't be back for another hour. They gave me a coffee and I waited in the area. When the manager finally returned, he came up to me and started the interview. I had done a lot of research on the company, but they only asked about my availability and if I had previous barista experience. I didn't hear back for a week, so I called them and was offered a trial shift. During this shift, I cleaned tables, emptied and refilled the dishwasher, and scrubbed the floors. I also got a basic intro on how to use the till. I'd heard that some coffee shops use trial shifts to get free labor from candidates who they don't intend to hire, and it became clear this was the case for me since I never heard from them again.
- Can you tell me about your past experience as a barista?
- What's your availability like?
Barista
I applied for this job using a paper application at the mall. It was a typical application asking for 3 references, my work history, and why I want the job. A few days later, they called me to set up an in-person interview. I interviewed with the kiosk manager for about an hour. We talked about why I'd be a good fit for the entry-level position and what I could bring to the team. I got an offer for part-time work at minimum wage a week later.
- Can you explain your lack of previous retail experience?
