First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Gibson Dunn & Crutcher.
Summer Associate
I went through law school OCI for this position. The process had two rounds, and each round consisted of 3-4 interviews, each lasting about 30 minutes. Two interviewers were present for every interview. Everything was conducted over Zoom because it was during the Covid years. The questions asked were pretty standard.
- Which law school classes did you enjoy the most?
Senior Associate
The #1 thing they care about is your GPA and class rank. Seriously. I guess it's their way of covering themselves, like 'Oh, we only hire the best, so it's not our fault if things go wrong.' The lawyers who interview you will seem super friendly, but don't expect that vibe once you're hired. There will be follow-up interviews. They want people who can adapt to anything because, besides the specific role you're filling, they're unsure about your long-term placement. The callbacks will be about the type of work you want to do; they have a lot of it in GD NY. You'll feel relieved and excited and accept their offer. However, you'll end up doing none of the work you expressed interest in. Yes, they have that work – that wasn't a lie. It's just 'sharp practice.' The reason is that work is already fully staffed, possibly due to acquiring a smaller, specialized GD firm, and there's no room for you.
- Could you share your law school class rank?
Associate
The interview process for associates can be really tough. You'll talk to about 10 lawyers, some from the hiring committee and some from practice groups. I had lunch with three people during my interview. They'll want your law school transcript no matter what, even if you're more senior.
- Tell me about your background and experiences.
- What are your key skills and how do they align with this role?
- Why did you choose to apply to our firm?
