This job had a three-part interview. The first was a remote screening interview, which was initiated early August. The next interview was in person, about two weeks later with two members of the team. The third interview was the following week, with two more members; I had an expiring offer elsewhere so it seemed like HR was willing to expedite the process. Both in person interviews were similarly structured; talking about skill, interests, etc, and sharing portfolio, followed by more in depth discussions. Every member of the team that I talked to had different perspectives and interests, all were great to talk to and very kind, interesting people.

It was a virtual interview with 2 people from Gensler. First, I was asked to introduce myself. Then they chatted about their projects. After they introduced themselves and went over the job, I had to present my design portfolio. If there was time left, I could ask them questions at the end.

Interview styles seem to differ across offices. The San Diego office had a more laid-back vibe, with the interviewer giving me ample time to discuss my work and asking about my thoughts on software and programming. In contrast, the Los Angeles office's interview felt more rigid, with standardized questions and less engagement with my responses, as if they were rushing. Given that my graduate portfolio mainly featured personal projects, they directly challenged my teamwork skills, asking me to define the essence of teamwork. I felt they already assumed I lacked teamwork ability, which was quite discouraging.
