First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at General Motors.
Manufacturing Process Engineer
The recruiter got in touch about my resume and then we had a screening call. They sent over a guide with the types of questions I might get. I had one interview with the hiring manager and the person who would be managing me directly. I got the offer after that first interview.
- Can you tell me about a time you had a disagreement with a coworker and how you worked it out?
Digital Experience Designer
There were two rounds in the interview process. First was a phone interview with the recruiter, which was pretty chill and the recruiter was really nice. It was mainly about my background and what I wanted. Then, there was a video interview with two managers and someone from the team. This part was a behavioral interview where they asked about my design process, past projects, and work history. They did check out my portfolio during the interview, even though there wasn't a formal portfolio review.
- Could you introduce yourself, discuss your experience, and share what you're seeking in a role?
Electrical Hardware Engineer Intern
I had a single interview that lasted about an hour. They asked me STAR format questions, why I like GM, and we did some small talk. My interviewers, who were GM employees with over 10 years of experience, were really impressed that I checked out their LinkedIn profiles beforehand and asked specific questions about their work. At the end of the meeting, I was told I'd get a call by the end of the week about whether I got the job, and I did get the call. It's worth noting that titles like 'electrical hardware engineering intern' don't really tell you what you'll be doing day-to-day because you get assigned to a team, and those teams can vary a lot in their function and the skills they need. Even though my actual work wasn't what I expected from the title, I'm happy with the experience.
- Can you describe a situation using the STAR method?
- What are your reasons for wanting to join GM?
- Do you have any questions for us?

The hiring process at GM was quite long, stretching over 4 months from the initial interview to the final offer. They primarily used behavioral interview techniques. The process involved three distinct interview rounds. The first round was conducted over the phone, while the subsequent second and third rounds took place in person.
- Can you share an instance where you faced a conflict and describe how you resolved it?
