Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Gen Korean BBQ.
Server
Got some basic interview questions. They wanted to know about myself, how I've handled upset customers, and about a tough challenge I faced and got through.
- Could you tell me a bit about yourself?
- How have you handled an upset customer in the past?
- Describe a time you faced a difficult challenge and how you overcame it.
Server
The interview process was straightforward. Upon arrival, the manager interviews you fairly quickly to go over expectations and discuss when you might hear back. You can apply online or in person, but applying in person is recommended for faster results. While turnover is high, it's for valid reasons; this serving job requires a lot of effort, with servers interacting with each table 10-15 times due to things like grill changes and refilling sides. Keep this demanding aspect in mind.
- Can you describe your previous experience in the food service industry?
Server
I talked to two managers at the same time about typical server stuff. They were really focused on why I left my last gig and what I didn't like about my old management. Honestly, it felt more like an interrogation than an interview, they didn't crack a smile. If you've done this before, the questions aren't that tough, unless they ask about specific locations or your experience with certain restaurants. Actually, interviews at fancier places have been easier. They said they'd let me know after talking to more people, but I pulled out. A big part of it was how I'd handle drunks since the managers might not always be around.
- How would you deal with an intoxicated customer?
- Are you familiar with Celiac disease?
- What's your approach to suggesting a menu item to a hesitant customer?
