Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Geeks.
Software Engineer
The interview process involved two meetings: one with the company head for technical discussions and another with HR. I also had to complete a sample project which presented some interesting challenges. Overall, the process was quite straightforward and went smoothly. They clearly communicated their expectations.
- Can you tell me about the technologies you have experience with?
Software Engineer
It started with a brief phone call, then a quick logic test, followed by an interview. After that, I did a two-week unpaid trial where I had to learn C#. They said an offer would come at the end of it. The next day, I got the offer, which was a four-year contract with a £30,000 penalty if I left before the end, decreasing over time. The pay was set at £20k for the first year, increasing by £3k annually. This pay structure is below industry standards and designed to prevent the usual first-year pay increase. It seems exploitative, targeting newcomers and enforcing poor terms. They claimed it's due to company risk, but they're the ones who profit. I'd advise serious consideration before accepting. I ended up emailing a hundred London software companies, got two interviews, and one job offer. My current job started at £24k and uses various languages.
- What attracts you to Geeks?
- What is your motivation for pursuing a career in software development?
Software Developer
First I had to do this test with 30 C# questions in Visual Studio about stuff like primitives, DateTime, Collections, LINQ, and IO. After I finished, they said they'd let me know and I left. About 30 minutes after getting home, they called to say they were really happy. I guess this call was like a screening after the test to see how I do on the phone, or maybe just a nice call to move me forward. They didn't say how I did on the questions, but I figure a few mistakes weren't a big deal since they could tell I knew C# and .NET. Then, I had a face-to-face with a Director. We talked about my experience and what the job would be like, like how many projects I'd get and what to expect. The company's grown a lot since I joined, from about 30 people to double that, and they've expanded the office too. There are other people who do HR, so I'm not sure if that helps, but the interview process was pretty good for me.

- We discussed my experience and what my role would include, the average number of projects I would be assigned to, and things to expect.
