Data Scientist
The interview process was pretty straightforward. It started with a recruiter call to discuss my background. They really stressed the importance of knowing financial topics, specifically forecasting, time series modeling and analysis, and A/B testing and analytics. After that, there was a take-home assessment with 6 questions – 4 were SQL-based and 2 were open-ended data analysis tasks. It's important to read the questions carefully because they can be a bit ambiguous. I missed one question and didn't move forward.
- Can you describe your background?
- Do you have experience with forecasting, time series modeling and analysis?
- Are you experienced with A/B testing and analytics?
Backend Engineer
The interview process began with a screening call that seemed to align well with expectations, giving a good general idea of the role. This was followed by an initial hour-long interview with a lead engineer. The interview focused on basic big-O complexity coding problems. It felt very corporate, with minimal questions about my experience and instead a lot of leading questions where I had to infer the direction based on the screening call. The questions were ambiguous, seemingly designed to make me talk until they interrupted. There was very little time for my own questions, and the answers about company culture or history were brief and uninspired. The interviewer made some incorrect corrections to my code, which suggested the team might be less experienced and potentially require more junior support. I was not selected for the role, and the feedback, along with further research, confirmed my initial impressions. It appears their interview practices are borrowed from larger companies without sufficient adaptation to the required skill level or the candidates' needs for success. Recruiting seems to need a better alignment of their candidate search to avoid placing skilled individuals in unsuitable situations.

Software Engineer
I started with the usual recruiter phone screen, then had a coding interview with the Engineering Manager, followed by a final series of technical panel interviews that went for over 4 hours. Most people I met were nice and professional. The technical part felt a bit excessive though, with some repeated questions across different panels. Sadly, the specific team I was interviewing with seemed pretty hostile from the start. Their questions were rambling and hard to follow, even when I asked for clarification, unlike everyone else at the company. Not sure why they were so defensive.
- Could you use pair coding to solve some simple algorithms?
- Could you design a database schema given these requirements?
- Could you design an API given these requirements?
Manager
So, I interviewed with Gametime in early 2022. First up was a call with HR, which was super nice and informative about the role and company. Then, HR set up the next interview with the hiring manager. That call went great, and they mentioned one final step: a panel review. The hiring manager even extended our chat past the scheduled time to talk more about the role. After that, I waited about a week, then followed up with HR, but heard nothing back – totally ghosted. It's a bummer because a quick 'we went with someone else' would be so easy after taking up our time.
