I was contacted via email after applying, and they asked me to complete a 3-part drawing test. The first part was to draw two characters in different styles: one realistic and one cartoonish. The second part involved creating environments for these characters. The third part required drawing an isometric building. I found the test instructions to be vague. They provided a style guide only for the third part, not the first two. After completing the test, I was told I didn't pass because my art style didn't match their game's style, which they hadn't clearly specified for the initial parts. I asked to retake the test since the instructions were unclear, but I never heard back, feeling like I wasted my time and did free work. Notably, there was no initial interview or pre-interview, which is unusual.

Technical Presentation

I was contacted by HR the same day my CV and portfolio were forwarded by a company employee after they announced they were looking for artists. The first step was a take-home character concept painting, which included a pet or follower in its environment. I had 4 days to finish a polished illustration. After being approved, I moved on to the second stage: drawing at the game studio. This involved a similar task: a character in its environment. I was given a PC, tablet, and Photoshop on the creation floor, with 2 days to complete it, surrounded by people working on their projects. This was likely the toughest part. My second illustration was approved, and HR contacted me within a week to return to the office for an interview. The interview seemed informal because they had already decided to hire me.

I applied for the Concept Artist role in New Orleans and got an email to set up an interview in 3 days. The recruiter was professional and asked typical questions. I received the art test, which had clear and descriptive directions, and I worked on it for a couple of weeks. After submitting it, I was informed they reviewed it carefully but decided not to proceed with my application.
