First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Futures Academy.
Teacher
The interview started with three interviewers: the Director of Enrollment, Director of Student Success, and the lead Sciences teacher. They asked about me, my interest, and availability. One interviewer had to leave partway through. They asked about my teaching experience and my teaching philosophy. Some questions were challenging, like teaching a student with ADHD. They also asked more straightforward questions. The next step would be a 15-minute mock lesson with the lead Sciences Teacher on a difficult physics topic, given my Physics degree. The interviewers seemed nice and receptive. The Academy's focus on 1-on-1 and flexible learning styles makes sense, but I didn't get the job. It might be because I don't have formal teaching experience. I thought it was for tutoring, but they focus on 1-on-1 teaching, which is like tutoring but with full learning responsibility.
- How would you approach teaching a student with ADHD?
- Do you know about differential learning?
- How do you ensure a student can deeply understand material you teach them?
Teacher
I had a phone interview first, then an in-person meeting with a demonstration. The campus felt small, with only a few rooms and not many students or teachers. Management mentioned they prefer fewer teachers, meaning teachers will need to teach more subjects than expected. They seemed more focused on how teachers handle discipline issues rather than teaching quality. Most teachers are part-time, unless they also take on HR or sales duties. It seems likely teachers would need a second job.
- Tell me about your background and experience.
- What attracts you to this particular role and institution?
- Can you describe your approach to teaching and your educational philosophy?
Teacher
After I sent in my application online, the school reached out to me pretty fast to set up an interview. I sat down with the director of the campus. We talked about my past work and schooling. Then she hit me with some either/or questions, like "Are you more like this or like that? Would you do this or that?" It felt like a professional chat, but also pretty relaxed and easygoing.
- When you plan, do you focus on the details or the big picture?
- Could you describe how you would adapt your teaching approach to accommodate students with diverse learning styles?
