Even though I was a regular freelancer for one of FP's publications, this started with a formal offer following an informal inquiry. The interview with an editor and sub-editor was laid-back and informal, but still professional. Since I was already a contributor, I didn't have to submit a portfolio. However, I know my work would have been closely examined for length and word count adherence. They really emphasized my experience with particular products and software, which was the most critical factor in Future's offer. Specific experience and knowledge were more valued than qualifications. My overall impression was that the editors knew exactly what they were looking for and who they wanted, and they were also friendly, relaxed people.

Technical Other

My interview for Staff Writer at LiveScience involved a two-part writing test a week later. I put a lot of effort into it, and the hiring manager said they'd be in touch, but I never heard back about the outcome. After a few weeks, I reached out and was ignored. It felt really rude and unprofessional to have candidates do tests and then not even tell them if they were unsuccessful, which seems to be how Future Plc operates based on other reviews.

The process was done virtually with good communication and updates. It took about a month in total to find out I got the job. The process included a call, a first interview, a test article, and a second interview.
